Woeseia oceani is a Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, and chemoheterotrophic bacterium belonging to the order Chromatiales. It was first isolated from coastal sediment collected from Xiaoshi Island, Weihai, China. Optimal growth for the species occurs at temperatures between 28°C and 35°C, within a pH range of 7.0-8.0, and salinity levels of 1-3% NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that Woeseia oceani shares approximately 92% similarity with species of the genus Thioalkalivibrio, but less than 91% similarity with other species, leading to its classification as a novel genus within a new family, for which the name Woeseiaceae is proposed. The isolate develops polar lipid profiles comprising phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and several unknown phospholipids. The major cellular fatty acids are iso-C17:0 and iso-C15:0, and the primary respiratory lipoquinone is Q-8. The DNA G+C content of Woeseia oceani is 59.3 mol%[1][2][1]

The genomic repertoire of the Woeseiaceae, including Woeseia oceani, reflects a broad physiological range that explains their ubiquity and abundance in marine sediments. It has been observed that Woeseiaceae/JTB255 are core members of microbial communities within diverse marine sediments, accounting for up to 22% of bacterial amplicons and 6% of total cell counts in European and Australian coastal sediments. The group displays an array of metabolic capabilities, including heterotrophy and facultative autotrophy, along with a truncated denitrification pathway to nitrous oxide. The diversity in energy-yielding metabolisms suggests that Woeseiaceae/JTB255 carry out essential yet currently unknown ecological functions in marine sediment environments[2].
